Glass Characteristics

laminate glass under impact

Tempered glass under impact.

interlayers of laminate glassLaminated glass: Made with an interlayer sandwiched between two pieces of glass. When put under impact energy, it may crack, but tends to remain intact, adhering to the interlayer of laminate material. This provides a strong barrier against forced entry or wind-blown debris. The glass in ITM4’s laminated/tempered viewports is wind-born debris resistant and blast resistant.

wire glass diamond pattern

Wire glass diamond pattern.

Wire glass: Made with wire mesh embedded in the glass during the
manufacturing process. When put under impact energy, the wire embedded in the
glass holds the broken fragments in place and prevents glass fallout. The glass in
ITM4’s wire/tempered viewports is fire-resistant and shatter resistant. Wire/tempered glass is not acceptable for applications requiring impact
safety rating.

tempered glass under impact

Tempered glass under impact.

Tempered glass: Made with an accelerated cooling process that makes it four to five times stronger and safer than untreated glass. When put under high levels of impact energy, the breakage pattern is similar to little pebbles and reduces the risk of injury. Tempered glass is used as the inside or back glass piece in our viewport
assemblies because it is less likely to have a thermal break and although it is strong,
it is not impact resistant.
